Germicidal UV Lamps

Victory Lighting Ultraviolet germicidal lamps are highly efficient emitters of ultra-violet (253.7nm) light which has very effective germicidal properties and is being used as part of the drive to combat the current crop of infectious diseases.

Although the science behind germicidal UV has been around for a long time, it hasn't been used until recently. The use  of Ultraviolet systems is growing, which has seen new products entering the market place and these products are suitable for a whole range of industries, not just hospitals.

UV-C light is a germicidal, it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, virus and other pathogens and so destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of micro-organisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of these bonds prevents the DNA from replicating and when the organism tries to replicate, it can not and dies.

Studies are currently being held to assess the effectivity of UV light on COVID-19, but UV disinfection has already been seen to be successful on treatment on other Coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, which have similar characteristics.

Amalgam 254nm Germicidal Lamps

An amalgam lamp is a special type of ultraviolet germicidal lamp that allows for higher UVC output and a larger temperature range in which the lamp remains operational through a technology that regulates the mercury vapor pressure in the lamp.

Unlike standard lamps the mercury is not left free within the lamp, but is fixed to gold amalgam spots along the axis of the quartz tube. Optimal mercury vapor pressure is maintained within an amalgam lamp by this amalgam spot which absorbs and releases mercury in the lamp as the temperature of the lamp fluctuates.

Since the mercury vapor pressure remains constant, the ultraviolet output also remains constant, this way an amalgam lamp is unaffected by changing ambient air or water temperatures and its ultraviolet output remains stable over a large temperature range.

Because these amalgam lamps maintain a stable ultraviolet output at higher temperatures, they can be powered at higher wattages, generating more UVC.
